Such thrills in the Serie BKT championship 2018-19! Brescia and Lecce are the two teams that have won direct promotion to Serie A.

Brescia has returned to Serie A after 8 years, gaining promotion two matchdays in advance. The team changed gear after matchday three with the sacking of David Suazo and the arrival of Eugenio Corini to take control of the biancoazzurri [the blue and whites in Italian].

From that moment on the group has grown and grown, with the boom in form of midfielder Sandro Tonali and top goalscorer Alfredo Donnarumma (25 goals in 32 games). The 11 “rondinelle” [“swallows”, as they are nicknamed] have succeeded in reaching the top of the table and heading directly into the top division.

There has certainly been no shortage of surprises in this championship: and one of these is called Lecce. The team from Puglia has played for promotion to Series A until the 90th minute of the last game. Its run has been extraordinary because it has moved up from Serie C to A in just two seasons.

This feat is even more astounding if you consider that in the move up to Serie BKT the management of the giallorossi [red and yellows] had decided to replace no less than 16 players. Thanks to its coach Fabio Liverani, the new group has found an identity and a style of play that have taken the team back to Serie A after 7 years of absence.

These are the stories we like to tell, stories of teams that have invested in young talent and have succeeded in winning the top positions in the table, game after game.

But the spectacle doesn’t end here, because there is still room for another team in Serie A next year. Citadella and Verona will be competing for that place on 30 May and 2 June in the playoff finals: who will triumph?
