Metz striker Idrissa Gueye is February's Rookie of the Month, the trophy that rewards the best young players in Ligue 2 BKT, recognizing the commitment of the league's Title Sponsor – BKT, leading Off-Highway Tires manufacturer - towards the new generations.
Gueye, who turned 18 in September, is Senegalese from Mbour. He joined Metz in the January transfer window from Generation Foot, a club in Dakar that has a technical and organizational partnership with Metz, honored by choosing the same team colors: white and maroon.
After playing his first seven minutes in his debut against Lorient on January 11, Gueye became a regular starter from the second match, playing as an attacking midfielder but mainly as a forward in Stephane Le Mignan's 4-4-2 formation. Against Paris FC, in his first start, he scored his first goal: the 2-1 (the match was later won 3-1 with a brace from his compatriot Diallo). Then, against Clermont Foot and Guingamp, he scored two consecutive goals in his golden February.
Metz, with four wins in the last five matches and only one defeat in the last fifteen, is now third in the Ligue 2 standings, just two points behind the leading pair Lorient-Paris FC, and is decisively aiming for a return to the top division, from which it has been absent since 2022. With the talent and goals of Idrissa Gueye, they might get an extra boost.
After Nkambadio, Lebreton, Mboup, and Bermont, the fifth Rookie of the Month has also been awarded: who will be the next to leave their mark?
